Misty Fjords provides a unique and exclusive lodge experience
Located just 50 miles south of Ketchikan on Alaska's Inside Passage, Misty Fjords Lodge is situated amid 2.2 million acres of rain forest, lakes, rivers, salt water fjords and wildlife framed by rock cliffs and a pale mist that surrounds the trees. The lodge lies near the mouth of Mink Bay at the site of a 19th-century salmon cannery.
Formerly called Mink Bay Lodge, the wooden structure was built by hand between 1988 and 1990 . The new owners, have subtly upgraded the lodge by adding five-star touches, including better furnishings, linens and museum-quality artwork. The lodge is operated under a permit issued by the U.S. Forest Service, making the newly christened Misty Fjords Lodge the only fishing lodge inside Misty Fjords National Monument.
Target Clientele: Misty Fjords appeals to an upscale traveler looking for an intimate, exclusive Alaska experience. A client who enjoys some independence would be a good prospect. There are no schedules or rules at Misty Fjords, only the guests' whims to direct the activities on any given day.
Accommodations: The lodge was built with cedar and pine, and the bedrooms carry a subtle aroma of the woods. The lodge has only six rooms, which are spacious and simple. Each is furnished with double beds made up with high-quality linens and a selection of Alaskan antiques and artifacts. Views are available of the woods or Mink Bay. Bathrooms are stocked with fluffy cotton bath sheets and towels and a full assortment of natural bath products.
Public Areas: Both the upper and lower hallways are built with large windows to let in light and provide clear views of the lush forest just behind the lodge. The walls of the lodge are decorated with antiques purchased at auction from Sotheby's. Some items include Native Alaskan blankets and masks, statues and other artifacts from the Pacific Northwest.
The living room is appointed with oversized leather couches, heavy chairs and wooden tables. A table and chairs are set up in the bay window for working on puzzles, playing cards and writing. A pool table is available for use in the main hall. There are no televisions or phones at Misty Fjords, and the only outside influence is the CD player stashed behind the fully stocked bar.
Guests may help themselves to whatever they wish. Cookies, coffee and tea are always available for anyone with the munchies.
Dining: The lodge's chef creates a distinctive menu each night. Guests may request special dishes, although due to the isolated location of the lodge, anything unusual must be requested in advance to allow the floatplanes delivery time. Some specialties include Dungeness crabs and shrimp pulled straight from the waters outside the lodge, which visitors themselves may help collect.
The dining room is situated with 180 degree views of the bay and forest. A wood burning stove complements a long, heavy wooden table and chairs.
Activities: The main sport at Misty Fjords is fishing. The lodge is equipped with boats of various sizes. Three 24-foot Olympic cabin cruisers carry four guests and a guide and two 19-foot Olympic cabin cruisers carry one guide and two guests. The boats are equipped with Global Positioning Satellite tracking systems and depth finders.
The area provides fishing for rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, and Dolly Varden as well as chum, coho, pink, king and sockeye salmon, halibut and rockfish. All gear is available, and the Misty Fjords staff handles all cleaning, packaging and freezing of fish for guests to take home.
Guests can also kayak, hike, watch for wildlife, or drop a line off the dock and relax while the fish come to them. A naturalist is on hand to answer questions or lead hikes. Wildlife abounds, with bears, deer, mountain goats, eagles, sea otters, seals and sea life. The waters of Misty Fjords are so deep whales traverse the area, so avid whale watchers can enjoy spotting the mammals from their windows.
Service: While the lodge only allows 12 guests, the staff numbers 15, providing for excellent service. Each pair of guests is assigned a fishing guide for the duration of the trip. They can request fishing excursions, kayaking trips, hikes or nature walks.
Strongest Selling Point: The lodge is unique because of its intimacy. A visit here is like walking into a private home. The freedom for guests to raid the refrigerator, make their own drinks and set their own pace makes for a relaxing vacation option.
Getting There: Getting to Misty Fjords is an adventure in itself. Guests are greeted at Ketchikan airport by a pilot and flown via float plane on a 30-minute flight over misty inlets and lush green mountains, finally ducking down into a secluded Mink Bay and landing on the water in front of the lodge's floating pier.
Rates: A five-night stay costs $2,400. Additional nights are $525.
